HOW TO STAY AHEAD OF YOUR DOCTOR AND INFLUENCE YOUR HEALTH
I was fortunate to live in a health-conscious home.
I still have echoes of my Mum saying don’t eat this, don’t eat too much of that, or my Dad saying this is bad for you and so on.
It wouldn’t take me long early into my career to realize that like many doctors, I was erroneously focusing on disease and not on health.
And if you think about it, health isn’t just the absence of disease.
Health I would find wasn’t exclusively obtained in the consultation room, but mainly depended on the lifestyle factors beyond it.
The logical conclusion, therefore, lay in empowering the patient to help them make decisions for their health.
I then set out to design a board game to help make the process of learning fun, but soon realised the instructions were approaching the size of the encyclopaedia Britannica.
Five years later and numerous versions and edits, I finally came up with How to stay ahead of your doctor and influence your health.
This book is divided into four parts, starting with organisation of the healthcare system including tips to survive it on every level.
It takes the reader behind the scenes, and offers helpful advice at every stage of the journey, from booking appointments, choosing the right doctor for your needs, building rapport with your doctor, and even how to save the national health service (NHS) money and much more.
The second part examines the human body and how it works, starting from cells right up to the various body systems.
There are also tips at the end of each chapter on what to eat to optimise each body system and stay healthy.
The third part mainly looks at how common signs and symptoms of diseases manifest.
It also gives an insight into how doctors think and diagnose disease, including tips on how to give an accurate history within a ten-minute consultation frame, and techniques of how to research your symptoms online.
Finally, it teaches the patient how to make the most of their medicine review, commonly prescribed drugs, their side effects, and much more.
The fourth and last part looks at an alternative approach to health and disease, explaining why your doctor might struggle with certain chronic ailments you might have.
Also, it looks at the digestive system and the microbiome, weight loss tips and mistakes, as well as healthy habits to maintain vibrant health.
With the current situation with COVID-19, leading to limited health resources, there has never been a better time to empower your health.
